From 2D to 3D

One of the privileges of working within a museum is access. Over the years, I have received access to artists, scientists, celebrity figures, intellectuals, and notable types of all kinds. I have also had the privilege of looking at art in ways that very few have and get to work with collection pieces, some of which are not currently in view to the public.

Fashion Sketch Umbrella

As I explored the PEM digital database, I noticed the collection of drawings for a bridal trousseau, and I was enchanted. There was something about how the articulation of the figures made them animated, and when put together, it almost looked like they were in conversation with each other. One of the first items I thought of was a puzzle, because at the time we were selling dozens of them during the first pandemic lockdown.

The sketches seemed perfect for an umbrella's underside as I envisioned one illustration in each panel. I first rendered them on black fabric, but then it occurred that perhaps something brighter would be fun.

To add a bit more interest, I discarded the basic black and chose a hot pink fabric for the outside and grey fabric on the inside. When the umbrella is held up, the colors merge into a kind of lilac color. This will be available at the PEM shop in the spring.

Here’s a sneak peek at a few additional products developed from these fashion sketches.
